Budget Calculator

The 50/30/20 budget rule is a simple framework for managing your money. Proposed by Senator Elizabeth Warren, it divides your after-tax income into three categories: 50% for needs (housing, food, utilities, minimum debt payments), 30% for wants (dining out, entertainment, hobbies), and 20% for savings and debt repayment. This calculator shows you where you stand.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter your monthly after-tax income (what actually hits your bank account).
  2. Enter your total fixed monthly expenses (rent, utilities, car payment, insurance, minimum debt payments).
  3. Enter your average variable monthly expenses (groceries, dining out, entertainment, shopping).
  4. Click Calculate to see your recommended budget allocation and whether you're on track.

The Formula

The 50/30/20 Rule: Needs = 50% of income, Wants = 30% of income, Savings & Debt Repayment = 20% of income. If your needs exceed 50%, look for ways to reduce fixed costs or increase income. If your wants exceed 30%, identify discretionary spending to cut.

Why It Matters

You earn $5,000/month after taxes. Your fixed expenses total $2,500 (exactly 50%). Your variable expenses are $1,000 (20% of income, well under the 30% wants limit). This means you have $1,500 left — enough to save $1,000 (20%) and still spend $500 on wants. You're in a strong financial position.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my needs exceed 50% of my income?
High-cost areas often make the 50% target unrealistic. If your needs are above 50%, shift the ratio — try 60/20/20 or 65/15/20. The key is to keep the savings target intact and reduce discretionary spending instead. Over time, look for ways to lower fixed costs: refinancing your mortgage, downsizing, or finding a cheaper housing option.
Does the 50/30/20 rule include student loan payments?
Minimum student loan payments count as needs (the 50% category). Any extra payments you make toward paying off student loans faster go into the savings/debt repayment bucket (the 20%). This distinction rewards proactive debt repayment while ensuring basic needs are covered first.
Should I use gross or net income?
Use your after-tax income (take-home pay) for the 50/30/20 rule. This is the money you actually have available to spend. If your paycheck doesn't reflect all deductions (like a 401k contribution), subtract those from your gross income first.
