BMI is a widely used screening tool that correlates body weight with height. Underweight (under 18.5) may signal malnutrition or underlying health issues — a doctor's evaluation is recommended. Normal weight (18.5-24.9) carries the lowest health risk and is the target range. Overweight (25-29.9) increases risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Obese (30+) multiplies those risks and is where doctors typically start recommending weight loss intervention. BMI is the weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Remember that BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat — athletes may read higher than their true body fat suggests.
