Body Fat Percentage Calculator

Body fat percentage is a more accurate health indicator than weight alone. The U.S. Navy method uses simple circumference measurements to estimate your body fat percentage. Essential fat (6-13% men, 14-20% women) is needed for basic bodily functions. Athletes (6-13% men, 14-20% women) have lean physiques from regular training. Fitness category (14-17% men, 21-24% women) reflects regular exercise and good health. Average (18-24% men, 25-31% women) is typical for the general population. Above average may carry increased health risk, though body fat alone isn't a full health measure. Muscle mass matters too — a bodybuilder at 12% and a sedentary person at 20% may weigh the same.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Select your gender.
  2. Measure your waist at navel level.
  3. Measure your neck just below the larynx.
  4. Measure your height.
  5. Women: measure hip at widest point.
  6. Click Calculate.

The Formula

U.S. Navy formula uses log-based ratios of circumferences. Men: waist/neck/height. Women: waist+hip/neck/height.

You are a 32-year-old male with a 36-inch waist, 15-inch neck, and 70-inch height. The U.S. Navy method estimates your body fat at 14.2% — in the fitness category. Athletes typically range 6-13%.
