Drywall Calculator

Drywall is sold in standard 4x8 (32 sq ft) or 4x12 (48 sq ft) sheets. This calculator estimates how many sheets you need for walls and ceilings, subtracting windows and doors, plus waste for cuts and mistakes.

Sheets Needed:

Total Area:

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter room length and width.
  2. Enter wall height (standard is 8 feet).
  3. Enter total window and door areas to subtract.
  4. Select your drywall sheet size (32 = 4x8, 48 = 4x12).
  5. Click Calculate to get the number of sheets needed.

The Formula

Wall Area = Perimeter x Height. Net Area = Wall Area - Windows - Doors. Sheets = (Net Wall Area + Ceiling Area) / Sheet Area.

Why It Matters

You are finishing a 400 sq ft room with 8-foot ceilings. Each 4x8 sheet covers 32 sq ft — 13 sheets per wall, 52 total. Add 10% for cuts: order 57 sheets. You also need ~20 lbs joint compound and 100 ft of tape.
