Mulch is sold by the cubic yard at most garden centers, or in 2-cu-ft bags at hardware stores. This calculator gives you both quantities so you can order the right amount and avoid overpaying for delivery or buying too many bags.

How to Use This Tool
Measure the length and width of the area you want to mulch.
Enter how thick you want the mulch layer (2-4 inches is standard).
Click Calculate to see cubic yards and number of bags needed.
The Formula
Volume = Length x Width x Depth. Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet / 27. 2-cu-ft bags = Cubic Yards x 54.
Why It Matters
You want to mulch a garden bed 40ft by 8ft at 3 inches deep. You need 8 cubic yards of mulch. Bulk delivery of 8 cubic yards costs ~$350 — much cheaper than bagged mulch ($540 for 108 bags).
